How to Tie Down a Motorcycle or ATV for Transport

Choose motorcycle or ATV tie-down straps by the machine's manual, rated anchor points, wheel chock, strap path and transport setup.

Quick answer

Use the tie-down locations named in the exact vehicle manual and straps suited to the load. Harley-Davidson lists at least 3 motorcycle straps and model-specific frame or fork attachment guidance; a 2026 Polaris Sportsman manual specifies front and rear tie-down locations and forbids attaching straps to the handlebars, racks or front A-arm bolt pockets.

Secure a motorcycle or ATV at the tie-down points its manufacturer names. The right strap path depends on the machine’s frame, suspension and transport instructions, so a convenient rack, handlebar or body panel is not automatically a suitable anchor.

Choose straps and loading equipment

Item What to check
Strap assembly Read the working-load label for the complete strap, including its buckle and hooks; choose a length and end fitting that reach the approved vehicle points
Soft loops Use them only where the strap and vehicle instructions permit; they can keep a metal hook from contacting finished motorcycle parts
Wheel chock Match it to the front wheel and securely attach it to the truck bed or trailer deck
Vehicle anchors Use the specific points named in the motorcycle or ATV manual, not a nearby part that only looks strong
Transport surface Confirm the truck or trailer has suitable capacity, tie-down anchors and a loading setup for the exact vehicle

Harley-Davidson lists motorcycle-specific ratcheting or cam-lock straps and says a loop at one end can keep the metal hook off the motorcycle’s finish. Polaris’s 2026 Sportsman XP 1000 S 2-Up manual gives a separate ATV method: front and rear designated tie-down points with suitable straps or rope, and no attachment to the front A-arm bolt pockets, racks or handlebars. These examples show why model-specific instructions control the strap route.

Secure a motorcycle using its instructions

Start with the operator’s manual, including any transport or security-system mode. Harley-Davidson advises using a front wheel chock, attaching straps at suitable frame or fork areas without pinching cables or hoses, securing the rear, tying loose strap ends and walking around the motorcycle before moving. It describes about 1 inch of suspension compression for the examples in its guide; use your motorcycle manual for the required amount.

For a truck setup, compare the equipment and loading sequence in our motorcycle trailer vs truck ramp guide. The ramp, chock and straps work as one system, so check their fit and ratings together.

Secure an ATV or UTV at its designated points

Follow the exact owner’s manual for the model and year. The cited Polaris Sportsman manual says to stop the engine, select Park, secure the fuel and oil caps and seats, attach suitable straps or rope at the designated front and rear locations, and remove the key. It specifically forbids using the front A-arm bolt pockets, racks or handlebars on that model.

Do not carry a young rider on an adult-size ATV; the youth ATV size and safety guide covers age labels and machine fit. For motorcycles, see our luggage layout guide before loading bags that can change clearance or weight distribution.

Common questions

How many straps should I use to transport a motorcycle?

Harley-Davidson's truck-loading guide lists at least 3 straps designed for motorcycles. Follow the transport instructions for your exact bike and the working-load limits of the full strap assembly.

Can I tie down an ATV by its handlebars or racks?

Polaris says not to attach straps to the handlebars or racks on the 2026 Sportsman XP 1000 S 2-Up. Check the exact ATV manual for its designated front and rear points.

Should I use a wheel chock when transporting a motorcycle?

Harley-Davidson includes a front wheel chock in its truck-transport equipment list. Secure the chock to the truck or trailer and then secure the motorcycle as its manual directs.

How tight should motorcycle tie-down straps be?

Use the amount of suspension compression specified in the motorcycle manual. Harley-Davidson's guide gives about 1 inch for the motorcycle examples it describes; that measurement is not a universal setting for every bike.
