Choose motorcycle luggage by where it mounts and what you carry: panniers sit at the sides, a top case mounts behind the seat, a tank bag uses the tank area and a tail bag sits on the seat or rear rack. Check model-specific mounts, clearances and load labels for the complete setup, then follow the motorcycle manual's cargo limits.
Choose a luggage layout before choosing the case material. Panniers, top cases, tank bags and tail bags place storage in different parts of the motorcycle, and each setup depends on bike-specific fitment and load limits.
Compare where each bag mounts
| Layout | Mounting area | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Panniers | Sides of the motorcycle | Model-specific side frames, exhaust clearance, balanced cargo and each case’s load label |
| Top case | Rear rack or case plate behind the seat | Compatible rack and plate, combined rack and case capacity, and rear cargo position |
| Tank bag | Tank area in front of the rider | Tank shape, filler access, handlebar clearance and whether the bag uses straps, magnets or a dedicated frame |
| Tail bag | Pillion seat or rear rack area | Attachment points, rear rack capacity, movement and clearance behind the rider |
Mounting and capacity are system-specific. GIVI says its Outback top cases attach to a compatible Monokey plate, while its Outback side cases need model-specific mounts for fitment and exhaust clearance. Its tank bag range includes multiple mounting approaches. These manufacturer examples explain why matching the bike and luggage system matters more than choosing by the bag’s name alone.

Check fit and load before installation
Confirm the motorcycle’s exact make, model and year in the luggage maker’s fitment information. Check which rack, plate, side frame or mounting kit is required, and whether it is part of the package. For a side case, check clearance around the exhaust and rear wheel. For a tank bag, verify clearance to the tank filler and controls throughout steering movement.
Use the motorcycle manual and the load labels for every part of the installed system. A Harley-Davidson LiveWire top-case installation guide, for example, sets a 13.6 kg (30 lb) combined maximum for its luggage and top case; that limit belongs to that specific setup and does not apply to another motorcycle. The maker’s Onyx tail bag instructions also call for securing straps away from the rear wheel and keeping reflectors and lights unobstructed. Keep cargo within the applicable capacity, distribute it as the vehicle maker instructs, secure loose straps and check the fittings after installation.

Common questions
Are motorcycle panniers better than a top case?
They serve different layouts. Panniers split storage across the motorcycle's sides, while a top case mounts behind the seat. Choose by your cargo, fitment and the load rules for your exact bike and rack.
Can I use a tank bag on any motorcycle?
No single mounting method fits every bike. Check the bag maker's application details and whether the system uses straps, magnets, a frame or a model-specific mount.
How much weight can I put in motorcycle luggage?
There is no universal luggage limit. Follow the lowest applicable capacity in the motorcycle manual and the labels for each bag, rack and mount.
Can I combine a top case and panniers?
Some luggage systems allow combinations, but the mounts, clearance and combined load limit vary by motorcycle and system. Verify both makers' instructions for your setup.
