ATV and UTV Tire Sizes, Load and Ply Ratings

Read ATV and UTV tire sizes, compare ply and star ratings, check fitment and use the vehicle's pressure label or owner's manual.

Quick answer

A size such as 27 × 11 R14 means a 27-inch tire diameter, 11-inch width, radial construction and a 14-inch rim. Ply rating indicates strength and load capacity, while the ATV star system describes maximum operating pressure; the two ratings do not convert directly, and the vehicle label or manual sets the correct fit and pressure.

Match ATV and UTV tires to the machine before choosing tread or a higher load rating. The sidewall gives the starting size, but the owner’s manual and tire label determine the approved fit, inflation pressure and load limit.

Read the size code

Polaris uses 27 × 11 R14 as an off-road tire-size example:

Marking Meaning
27 Approximate tire diameter in inches
11 Tire width in inches
R Radial construction
14 Wheel rim diameter in inches

Match the full size and position to the vehicle maker’s fitment chart. Also check the rim width, load rating, clearance and whether the replacement is intended for the front or rear axle. A matching rim diameter alone does not establish compatibility.

Compare tread and rating for the job

Marking or tread What it tells you Buying check
Ply rating Strength or load-capacity index, not a count of physical plies Match the vehicle’s load requirements; more rating can add weight and does not fix an incorrect size
Star rating For AT-marked ATV tires, a maximum operating pressure category Do not use it as the vehicle’s recommended inflation pressure
All-terrain tread A general-purpose pattern Compare the maker’s fitment, load and terrain details
Sand or mud tread A pattern designed around a more specific surface Match it to the terrain and the vehicle’s approved size and use

Carlstar lists 1-star, 2-star and 3-star ATV tire limits as 4, 5 and 7 PSI maximum operating pressure respectively. Those values are tire-system ratings, not recommended settings for an ATV. Can-Am says pressure depends on the vehicle model, conditions and tire, and directs owners to the vehicle’s pressure and maximum-load label or manual.

Polaris explains that a modern ply rating describes overall tire strength and load capacity rather than actual layer count. Its off-road guide also distinguishes sand, mud, racing and all-terrain tread designs. Treat a more aggressive or higher-rated tire as a fitment choice, not an automatic upgrade: check size, axle position, load, clearance and pressure together.

Check the whole machine before ordering

  1. Record the original tire size and front or rear position from the sidewall and owner’s manual.
  2. Look up the exact year, make, model and trim in the tire or wheel maker’s fitment chart.
  3. Compare the replacement’s load rating and rim requirements with the vehicle’s label and manual.
  4. Set cold pressure to the vehicle maker’s specification, then inspect pressure and tread before riding.

If the tire choice is for a work or snow setup, compare the machine’s plow system components and winch rating with its intended load. For a young rider, first match the machine to the age category in our youth ATV sizing guide.

Common questions

How do I read an ATV tire size such as 27 × 11 R14?

In Polaris's example, 27 is the tire diameter in inches, 11 is its width, R means radial and 14 is the rim diameter in inches. Check the vehicle fitment chart before choosing a replacement.

Does an 8-ply tire have eight physical layers?

Not necessarily. Polaris says ply rating reflects overall strength and load capacity, not a literal count of the tire's material layers.

Is ATV star rating the same as ply rating?

No. Carlstar says star rating marks maximum operating pressure for AT-marked tires, while ply rating indicates strength; the systems have no direct conversion.

What pressure should I use in ATV tires?

Use the pressure and maximum-load label on the vehicle or its owner's manual. Can-Am says the recommendation varies by vehicle model, riding conditions and tire model.
